January 2012 Half Case Club, Red

2010 Apaltagua Reserva Pinot Noir
Apaltagua’s Pinot Noir has a brilliant ruby color and emphasizes aromas of cherries, raspberries, and soft notes of oak. It boasts smooth and elegant tannins and a sophisticated finish. The grapes come from Apaltagua’s own vineyard in Tricao in theCuricoValley.

Senorio De P. Pecina Cosecha 2009

As a flavor profile, red fruits like strawberries and cherries can predominate – but with a rustic edge. Many wines made from Tempranillo will spend a few years in barrel and bottle before reaching the consumer. Many Tempranillo-based wines see a few years of oak – add that to a few years of bottle and the wine can give a subtle – and occasionally not-so-subtle – leathery mouth feel. The combination of the tart fruit and tannins make this wine very food friendly.

Cigar Box Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Full bodied, with dark deep ruby color, this cabernet packs some inspiration. Vanilla, tobacco, dark ripe fruits, prunes, toasted oak, and spices all describe this cab. I’m missing something, possibly complexity. All of these flavors seem very one-lined and flat. I can’t help but notice its fine tannins and long finish, though.

Finca El Origin Malbec 2009

Deep ruby red color wine with complex and elegant aromas. On the palate, it is round with soft tannins and a well integrated oak character.

Dense and solid from the start, with deep plum, wild berry and earth aromas. Ripe, whole and nice on the palate, with crusty blackberry, chocolate and spice flavors. Finishes lightly toasted, with comportment. A Really good value for everyday Malbec.

Domaine Berthet-Rayne Veilles Vignes Cotes-Du-Rhone 2009

This vieilles vignes (old vines) 2007 is a delicious Côtes du Rhone made by our Chateauneuf producer Christian Berthet-Rayne. Made with a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault grapes it displays delicious red fruit flavors with hints of raspberries and a warm spicy finish. Better than many a Chateauneuf at a great price.

99 Vines Zinfandel

Few Cabernet Sauvignons at this price point taste distinctly of their labeled grape variety or show any depth so I must admit I was wholly and happily surprised in all this brought to the table. This is true Cab with plenty of character. Ripe, round blackberry fruit open up to a nice varietal Cabernet Sauvignon that swells further on the palate showing brown baking spices and a rich fruit through a rich and balanced finish.
